Development of surgical techniques using the world’s first follicular unit hair transplantation and the implanter
Hair transplantation was first developed in the United States during the 1950s. Initially, it began with the punch method of hair planting using about a 4mm punch to extract hair from the back of the head and plant it on the grafting area where the same sized hole was made. However, the results of this method were very unnatural because the hair sprouted like bristles on a toothbrush. Therefore, this method often delivered low levels of patient satisfaction.
In order to improve the unnatural design from the punch method and the mini-grafting, Professor Jung-Chul Kim at Kyungpook National University developed a new hair transplantation method in 1992 using the world’s first follicular unit transplantation and the implanter. Follicular unit refers to the hair unit on the scalp. Hair on the scalp grows in follicular units, and each unit comprises 1-3 hairs growing from a single opening in the skin. For Asians including Koreans, 46% of hairs are single hair follicular units and 54% are 2 to 3 hair follicular units. For most Caucasians, however, hair mostly grows in 2 to 3 hair follicular units, with only 5% being single hair follicular unit.
Follicular unit transplantation provides the best results because it involves transplanting hair follicular units in a normal distribution pattern on the scalp, thereby preserving the original hair distribution. This method is ideal for all types of hair, especially for Koreans’ thick, dark, and straight hair.
Use of the KNU Implanter
Dr. Ahn uses the latest KNU Implanter for follicular unit transplantation surgery.
By using a KNU Implanter a large amount of hair can be transplanted in a short period of time. This method demonstrates high survival rates of hair after transplantation, thus it increases the satisfaction of the surgery.
The KNU Implanter is categorized into three sizes S, M, and L. The S type is used for a single hair, M for 2-hair units, and L for 3-hair units. The KNU Implanter has been patent in Korea, the United States, China and Japan.
Male Pattern Baldness
In the case of male patients, it is desirable to prepare for progression of baldness as they age. The surgery range should be decided by estimating the baldness that is expected rather than the current baldness area. Transplantation needs to be processed in between existing hairs. Dr. Ahn takes into consideration the patient’s gender, age, hair density, and distribution of hair before the surgery. Dr. Ahn also consults on design with the patient, which increases the overall satisfaction with the most natural result after the transplantation surgery.
